False Bay History

False Bay is stretching from Cape Point on the peninsula to the charming villages of Simon's Town, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay, St. James, Muizenberg all the way to Hangklip, close to Pringle Bay.

False Bay's water is 5°C (41 F) warmer than the Atlantic Seaboard. Visit the Penguin sanctuary at Boulders Beach near Simon's Town as well as Scratch Patch and Cape Point.

The formidable Dias in 1488 first referred to the bay as "the gulf between the mountains" (Schirmer, 1980). The name "False Bay" was applied early on (at least three hundred years ago) by sailors who confused the bay with Table Bay to the north. According to Schirmer, the confusion arose because sailors returning from the east (The Dutch East Indies) initially confounded Cape Point and Cape Hangklip, which are somewhat similar in form.

Hottentots Holland mountain range forms a natural barrier between the Cape Peninsula and the south coast. It was often used as a refuge by the Hottentot people after stealing cows or retreating from a land squabble with the settlers.

The Dutch realised that the Hottentots loved the rocky mountains as much as they themselves loved Holland, so they named them the 'Hottentots' Holland'.

When the European settlers tried to get over these mountains they found only animal trails from migrating herds. They used these steep boulder-ridden paths to reach the Overberg ('over the mountains') and the scar of wagon wheels worn deep into the rocks can still be seen today.

On the summit in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve is a natural garden of wild flowers with the richest and most diverse floral population in the world.

Fish Hoek Beach, South Africa

Along the False Bay coast road, about 10 km (6.2 miles) north of Simon's Town, lies the placid town of Fish Hoek. The long stretch of white sand on Fish Hoek Beach is one of the safest places to swim in the Cape Peninsula, if not in the whole country. False Bay (Afrikaans "Valsbaai") is a body of water defined by Cape Hangklip (Dutch/Afrikaans for "Hang-stone") and the Cape Peninsula in the extreme South-West of South Africa.

Lala Phantsi Inn is located on the "warm side" of the Cape Peninsula where you would actually be able to bathe. The temperature is between 18-25 C. We also have a small pool in a protected location from wind and insight.
Fish Hoek Beach, South Africa

This seaside village is surrounded by rugged mountains and boasts one of the safest swimming beaches in Cape Town. Fish Hoek is a glorious bay with a beautiful white sandy beach, with colourful Victorian bathing boxes that add a festive flavour. The beach is a favourite with wind surfers, lifesavers and hobie cat sailers. Visitors will mingle with the locals who swim and walk their dogs on the accessible beach or stroll along the catwalk which heads southwards to Sunny Cove. Fish Hoek Galley, situated right on the beach offers a restaurant and take-aways and is a prime whale watching site to view the Southern Right Whales when they are in the bay to calf between July and November.
